Much of the research conducted within the research departments of ELEC and ETRO revolves around gathering, selecting, interpreting and modelling this gigantic pile of data. Fundamental insights in new programming languages

The image conjured up in people's minds by the word ‘computer’ ten years ago is a far cry from the kind of computers we take with us in our pockets wherever we go today. Computer scientists at the Software Languages Lab of the VUB's Computer Science (DINF) Department are developing new programming languages that meet the requirements of this digital revolution. In doing so, they are examining ways for computers to work together and how exchanged data remain consistent.

Mathematical models: instruments to better assess the world

You may not be able to notice them, but mathematical models are all around us. Climate models are forecasting changes in climatic conditions, the Airbus A380 spent thousands of hours flying in simulated air space conditions before it took off for its maiden flight whilst new cars are subjected to virtual crash tests on computers before the construction of costly prototypes gets under way. All of these computer tests require solid and reliable mathematical models.

Moving towards a interdisciplinary system biology centre at the VUB

The VUB researchers of the Physics (DNTK), Applied Biological Science (DBIT) and Biology (DBIO) Departments are pooling their scientific strengths through – you guessed it – mathematical models. In doing so, they are melding the expertise of biologists and bioengineers in the areas of metagenomics (the study of genetic material deriving from the environment) and microbial ecosystems with expertise in physics: techniques of non-linear and collective dynamics from physics are applied to biological systems (Systems biology).
