Summer Schools at VUB 2019

Summer School on EU policy-making: analysing human security in today's EU

Packed with interactive seminars and study visits (EU Commission, Parliament, Council, OSCE, UN) this summer programme attracts students and young professionals who wish to broaden their knowledge of the European institutions, European law and the European decision-making process in general.

The first week of the summer school takes place in Brussels and reviews the main EU institutions and decision-making procedures, while theoretically exploring questions of governance, participation and legitimacy. During the second week students learn more about EU foreign relations, while enjoying the beautiful city of Vienna.

Each year, the programme has a central theme. In 2019, this summer school will focus on ‘Analysing human security in today’s EU’. While touching upon all EU policy fields, we will offer participants insights into several aspects of security, including security in its traditional sense (defense) but also from a societal perspective (migration, environment, development).

Throughout the two weeks, participants will work in small groups on an assignment related to human security. The final result will take the form of a written article, video report, podcast or infographic to be presented to their peers at the end of the summer school.

International Summer School on Analytical Science, Metrology and Accreditation

This school is not just about you listening to some lectures. We try to keep lectures to a minimum, with some of the teaching even via a MOOC prior to the school. It is about interactive and problem-based learning. You will be engaged in an analytical challenge, where you will be part of a team carrying out real analysis for a customer who wants to know whether their product is compliant. A laboratory is set up for this at the venue.

This school teaches you the basics of the international standard ISO/IEC 17025, as well as the role of metrology and accreditation. How to interpret the requirements of the standard is not that straightforward for chemical and bio-analytical measurements. This is exactly the focus of this school which lasts two weeks.
